Why a SpaceX Pilot Chose the Mustang Mach E Over a Tesla Post

Recently the Detroit Free Press ran a story about SpaceX astronaut and pilot Dr. Sian “Leo” Proctor and how, after taking a journey to space as a member of the Inspiration4 crew and her new Ford Mustang Mach-E. In the article, which can be found here, Dr. Proctor discusses why even though she works for SpaceX, she chose the Mustang Mach-E over the Tesla.

She also shared a picture on her Instagram of a Ford Bronco II and offered more detail about her decision to go with the Mustang Mach-E, “I needed an EV for all the city driving I’m doing. I’m going back to work at my community college district and will be visiting schools doing education outreach all over the phoenix valley.”

Here at Essential Ford of Stuart, it makes us wonder why exactly would a SpaceX Pilot that works with Elon Musk, Founder of Tesla, make such a choice in an EV? So, we wanted to take a moment to look at just how the Mustang Mach-E stacks up against the Tesla Model Y.

Performance

The Mustang Mach-E reaches a robust 459-horsepower on the extended range 98.8 kWh battery pack. With the GT option, you’ll have all the power of 0-60 mph mid-3 second range time to have some fun on the Florida roads.

However, the Tesla Model Y only puts out a max of 384-horsepower unless you want to spring for the super expensive Performance version with 456-horsepower. But trust us when we say those three horses make a difference in your driving experience. With a 4.8 second 0-60 mph acceleration time, the Model Y lags behind the Mach-E.

Range

With an estimated EV range of 230-300 miles on a full charge depending on which trim of the Mustang Mach E you choose. You’ll be able to drive practically anywhere across Florida you want and charge it quickly, too, using the fast charging capabilities that can be used on the largest charging network in the U.S.

While the Long-Range Model Y is said to reach an EPA-estimated 316 miles on a single charge, you’ll only get an estimated 280-mile range if you choose the Performance upgrade. Tesla has built their own nationwide network of fast-charging charging stations throughout the country, but its network isn’t as far-reaching as Ford’s.

As we look at just the performance and range of the Mustang Mach-E compared to the Tesla Model Y, you can start to see why Dr. Proctor went with the power, styling, and handling that comes with the Mach-E.
