What to Expect from the Ford F-150 Lightning’s Fast Charging and Range Post

Are you ready for the Ford F-150 Lightning? More than 200,000 reservations have already been made for Ford’s all-new electric pickup, and it’s easy to see why. This revolutionary EV is set to change the auto industry in so many ways, thanks in part to its incredibly fast charging and long range. Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road in Ford’s innovative EV.

Impressive Range

Plan to drive long distances in your new pickup? The Ford F-150 Lightning has an impressive range. According to the automaker, its standard battery can cover up to 230 miles on a single charge. In XLT or Lariat trims with the optional extended-range battery, that number bumps up to 320 miles. If you opt for the top-tier trim, the Lightning Platinum, you can expect to get up to 300 miles of range due to its larger battery pack.

Keep in mind, though, that if you’re traveling long distances, the expected range can differ dramatically. Driving extended distances at speeds of more than 55 mph causes any EV to come up short of their projected range. In real-world test drives of the F-150 Lightning, MotorTrend found that the maximum range was 255 miles when driven at an average speed of 70 mph.

Of course, as with gas cars, mileage varies due to several factors like extreme temperatures, higher speeds, and even elevation changes. By driving slower, limiting air conditioning, and minimizing hard braking, you can extend your range significantly.

Fast Charging

Most Lightning owners will rely on a 240-volt charging station at home to keep their vehicles ready for the road. If you’re out on a long road trip, though, you may need to rely on DC fast-charging stations, also known as Level 3 stations, and here’s where charging time matters. MotorTrend found that the Lightning added 74 miles after 15 minutes of charging. After 30 minutes, that number increased to 133 miles. It takes over an hour to complete a full charge.

While the Lightning can’t suck in power quite as fast as its primary rivals—Rivian’s R1T and GMC’s Hummer EV—it offers peak charging power early on in every charging cycle. That means you can hop from charging station to charging station, if your location allows, for quick charges that give you enough power to unplug and carry on.
