When evaluating midsize trucks, the choice is clear – the 2021 Ford Ranger is the cream of the crop. Comparing this year’s Ranger to the 2021 Toyota Tacoma, the former boasts a more affordable price tag across all trims. The Ford Ranger features the standard 2.3L EcoBoost® I-4 engine with auto start-stop technology – the same engine used in Mustangs, modified for truck duty – with the 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. The Ranger bests the Tacoma for power, torque and fuel economy with 270 hp @ 5,5000 rpm, 310 lb-ft @ 3,000 rpm torque, and 23 mpg (21 city/26 hwy); compare that to the Toyota’s 159 hp @ 5,200 rpm, 180 lb-ft @ 3,800 rpm torque, 21 mpg (20 city/23 hwy), and 6-speed automatic transmission.
Towing, Payload, and Acceleration
Ford’s towing bests Toyota’s, and the Ranger’s payload capacity has been named best in class. All Ranger models are rated to tow up to 7,500 lbs, and the SuperCab, 6-ft bed, RWD models can carry up to 1,860 lbs in their beds. Meanwhile, the Tacoma’s max towing capacity is 6,800 lbs in its models available with the V-6 engine and towing package. Maximum payload in the Tacoma is 1,420 lbs. And according to MotorTrend, the Ford Ranger consistently accelerated from 0-60 mph faster than the Tacoma. The Ranger clocked in between 6.3 to 6.7 seconds, while the Tacoma’s runs ranged from 6.8 and 7.7 seconds.
