The 2021 Ford Mustang builds on the loved features of the 2020 sports car, with added refinement as well as the anticipated return of the Mach 1. Available in six models, the Mach 1 joins the EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Shelby GT500, with MSRP from $27,155. This year’s Mustang now features impressive V8 engines, fuel-efficient turbo four, a refined ride with sports-car handling, and elegant, high-end styling. Newly standard this year are variable speed intermittent and rain-sensing wipers as well as the Blind-Spot Monitor, Lane Departure Warning, and Lane Keeping Assist.

Return of the Mach 1

The new Mach 1 Fastback ($52,915) is equipped with the same 480-horsepower 5.0-liter V-8 engine found in the outgoing Mustang Bullitt. Many of its parts are sourced from the Shelby GT350 and Shelby GT500, like an upgraded Tremec 6-speed manual gearbox with downshift rev-matching. The track-focused Mach 1 boasts an aerodynamic system, sport-tuned MagneRide adaptive suspension, front strut tower brace, Brembo brakes, a 3.73 rear axle, extra cooling for the engine, transmission, and differential, as well as Torsen 3.73 limited-slip differential, 19-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, active exhaust system, and a cue ball shift knob with the manual transmission only. This model also offers satin black stripes accented with red, white or orange and leather-covered Recaro sport seats.

Shelby GT500

In addition to 760 horsepower, the powerful Shelby GT500 Fastback features high-performance hardware like MagneRide suspension, Brembo brakes, and a lightweight front strut tower brace. This model showcases the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine, 7-speed dual-clutch automated transmission, leather seating surfaces, 12-inch LCD digital instrument cluster, selectable drive modes, 20-inch aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, and a dual exhaust with quad tips. Plus, it goes 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, reaches a ¼ mile in 10.7 seconds while traveling in excess of 130 mph, and reaches a top speed of 180 mph. The Carbon Fiber Track Handling package combines the finest features of the 2020’s two mutually exclusive option packages, adding carbon fiber aerodynamic parts, 20-inch carbon fiber wheels, and adjustable strut top mounts.

EcoBoost

The 2.3 EcoBoost Fastback ($28,350) and 2.3 EcoBoost convertible ($34,850) have 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, height-adjustable driver’s seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, self-dimming rearview mirror, LED headlights and sequential taillights, dual exhaust system, electronically lockable front brakes, and the programmable MyKey system (controlling geofencing, speed limit, stability control, audio volume, radio content, seat belt reminders, and low fuel warnings). You’ll also find the SYNC infotainment system with 4.2-inch screen, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, voice controls, WiFi, two USB ports, auxiliary audio input, and a 6-speaker audio system. The EcoBoost Premium Fastback ($33,370) and EcoBoost Premium convertible ($38,870) add 18-inch wheels, power-adjustable front seats, simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear parking sensors, an upgraded SYNC 3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smart phone integration, satellite radio, and a 9-speaker audio system.

GT Fastback

This model ($37,315) mirrors the regular EcoBoost, but with a V8 engine and heftier brakes. The GT Premium Fastback ($41,315) and GT Premium convertible ($46,815) add the EcoBoost Premium’s equipment catalogue. Options include 20-inch alloy wheels, navigation, adaptive cruise control, enhanced anti-theft system, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient cabin lighting, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, carbon-fiber interior trim, satellite radio, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, and those handsome racing stripes. The GT’s Handling Package offers uprated brakes, Ford’s MagneRide adaptive suspension, and a Torsen (torque-sensing) limited-slip differential.

Safety Features

The Ford Co-Pilot 360™ advanced driving assistance system comes standard on the 2021 Mustang. You’ll find forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Mustang also comes standard with anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, and seven airbags in the coupe.
