Ford’s making big news in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, announcing the introduction of a cutting-edge battery, the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This year, the Blue Oval is adding these innovative batteries to its EV line-up, starting with the 2023 Mustang Mach-E. Here’s everything you need to know.
Ford’s LFP Battery
Why have so many automakers been so slow to produce affordable EVs? The main issue preventing the widespread adoption of EVs is the high cost of the nickel and cobalt used to create traditional EV batteries. As more EVs come to market, demand for these minerals is causing prices to rise even higher.
Now, Ford’s announcing a solution to the problem, introducing a new type of battery with a very novel chemical makeup. The change starts this year with the Mustang Mach-E in both America and Europe, with the F-150 Lightning truck to follow next year. These vehicles will be getting brand-new power packs—Ford’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.
The LFP batteries are set to replace traditional nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) batteries which rely heavily on expensive, hard-to-mine minerals. While Ford will still offer NCM batteries in its vehicles to protect the company from possible material shortages and cut customer wait times for EVs, every 2023 Mach-E will rely on the new LFP batteries. LFP Batteries Offer Significant Advantages
LFP batteries are outpacing other batteries in several applications, including the EV space. Here are some of the benefits of LFP batteries:
- Enhanced Fast Charging. One of the primary advantages of LFP batteries is their fast-charging capabilities. They charge much more quickly compared to other battery types, and they’re compatible with many portable power stations. They’re set to tolerate more frequent and faster charging.
- Greater Durability. LFPs last longer than any other type of battery, thanks in part to their exceptional durability. This battery composition has a high tolerance for faster charging—it’s not only less sensitive to very low and very high states of charge but also less sensitive to low temperatures.
- Less Reliance on Critical Materials. LFP batteries reduce Ford’s dependence on critical minerals like nickel and cobalt, allowing the automaker to produce more batteries at scale. LFP batteries are set to be much less expensive than traditional EV batteries, opening up EVs to a much wider market.
Ford’s Committed to an All-Electric Future
Ford wants to make EVs accessible to more people as quickly as possible, and its commitment to open a $3.5 billion battery plant in Michigan reflects the automaker’s long-term vision. Scheduled to open in 2026, the plant will allow the company to rapidly scale EV production and offer more choices to EV customers.
