The 2021 Ford Bronco and Bronco Sport share few parts, however, the SUVs both perform at the top of their class. The Bronco’s base starting price tag is $29,995 while the Bronco Sport starts at $28,155. Here’s how the two models stack up.

Body & Dimensions

The Bronco offers removable doors which can be stowed on board as well as three hard top and soft top designs with various configurations ranging from fully open to fully closed. And clean-up is a snap with the first ever waterproof, marine-grade vinyl upholstery and available floor coverings with footwell drains. The Bronco Sport’s roof and doors don’t detach, but may come with a sunroof. Engines, Chassis & Suspension

For the standard Bronco, choose from either the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder or the 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6; the former produces 270 hp with 310 lb-ft of torque while the latter boasts 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. In comparison, the Bronco Sport offers a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder that puts out 181 hp and 190 lb-ft torque or the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder with 245 hp and 275 lb-ft. The Bronco’s chassis, an off-road-oriented, body-on-frame SUV, is built on a platform that will also support the next Ranger midsize truck. Meanwhile, the Bronco Sport is based on the Ford Escape crossover with a unified body and chassis as well as a transverse engine. And the Bronco comes with a control-arm front suspension and an available front anti-roll bar disconnect device. Additionally, the standard Bronco boasts radius rods and a Panhard rod with options like locking front and rear differentials and hardy underbody protection for major off roading. In contrast, the Bronco Sport delivers a smoother ride with new springs and dampers, updated control arms and knuckles for increased suspension travel, track width, and ground clearance, but otherwise keeps its fully independent front strut and rear multilink suspension design.

Transmissions & 4WD/AWD Systems

The Bronco offers either the top-notch 10-speed automatic developed with General Motors or the Getrag 7MTI550 seven-speed manual gearbox that showcases the ultra-low “granny gear” first ratio for rock crawling; meanwhile, the Bronco Sport comes with an eight-speed automatic. Both offer two transfer cases. The big Bronco’s base has the electric shift-on-the-fly unit, offering 2Hi, 4Hi, 4Lo, and neutral. Upgraded trims feature electromechanical shifting with a full-time 4-Auto mode with a 3.06:1 low-range. Offering major traction, the standard Bronco comes with its G.O.A.T. Mode (Goes Over Any Terrain) that includes Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, Sand, Baja, Mud, and Rock Crawl. As for the Bronco Sport, the base has a typical rear differential and the upgraded trims feature bevel gear driving half shafts for several clutches that engage drive to each rear wheel and can add torque vectoring. Additionally, it has water cooling for the power takeoff unit as well as Normal, Eco, Sport, Slippery, and Sand terrain-mode settings. The Badlands models add two G.O.A.T. Modes – Rock Crawl and Mud and Ruts.
