#1 For Initial Quality

Ford has reached a major quality milestone. In the 2026 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study, Ford ranked #1 among mainstream automotive brands for new-vehicle initial quality.

The result follows several years of improvement across Ford engineering, manufacturing, software, and supplier quality. Several of Ford’s best-known vehicles also finished at the top of their individual segments.

For drivers shopping at Essential Ford of Stuart, here is what the award means and which Ford models stood out.

What Does #1 in Initial Quality Mean?

The J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study measures problems reported by owners during the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership.

Results are expressed as problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. A lower score means owners reported fewer problems.

In the 2026 study, Ford ranked highest among mainstream brands. Ford also improved by 41 fewer problems per 100 vehicles compared with the previous year, the largest year-over-year improvement among mainstream brands.

Important: Initial quality measures problems experienced during the first 90 days of ownership. It is not the same as long-term vehicle reliability.

Three Ford Models Ranked Highest in Their Segments

Ford’s overall result was supported by strong individual vehicle performance.

The Ford F-150, Ford Mustang, and Ford F-Series Super Duty each ranked highest in their respective segments in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. All three achieved that result for the second year in a row.

Ford F-150

The F-150 was one of Ford’s segment winners. The current lineup offers multiple powertrain choices, including EcoBoost, V8, and PowerBoost hybrid options, with configurations ranging from work-focused trucks to luxury and off-road models.

Ford Mustang

The Mustang also ranked highest in its segment for a second consecutive year.

Ford Super Duty

Ford Super Duty also earned the top initial-quality result in its segment, an important distinction for trucks that are often used for demanding towing and commercial work.

Seven Ford Models Finished in the Top Three

Ford’s strong results extended beyond the three segment winners.

The Ford Escape, Explorer, Expedition, and Maverick also finished among the top three vehicles in their respective segments.

Altogether, seven of the 10 Ford models evaluated placed in the top three of their segments.

That means the strong showing covered a wide range of Ford vehicles, from compact trucks and sports cars to family SUVs and heavy-duty pickups.

How Did Ford Improve Its Initial Quality?

According to Ford, the result followed a multi-year effort focused on vehicle quality, manufacturing, supplier collaboration, and software.

  • Closer coordination between engineering, manufacturing, supply-chain, and quality teams
  • Earlier supplier involvement during vehicle development
  • Additional design and launch reviews
  • Expanded factory quality checks
  • More software testing before updates reach customer vehicles

Ford also reported improvement in infotainment quality, an increasingly important area as modern vehicles rely more heavily on software and connected technology.

Does This Mean Ford Is the Most Reliable Brand?

Not exactly.

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study focuses on problems reported during the first 90 days of ownership. Long-term dependability is measured separately.

Ford’s #1 mainstream-brand result shows that owners in the 2026 Initial Quality Study reported relatively few early ownership problems. It does not predict how every Ford vehicle will perform many years later.

For shoppers considering a new vehicle today, however, strong initial quality can still be meaningful because it reflects the experience owners are having shortly after taking delivery.
