There’s nothing quite like a Ford, and we’re not just saying that because they’re one of the firsts. The Ranger was already a beast in its own right, but the Raptor model ups the game even further. Can the Colorado ZR2 Bison catch up? We don’t think so.

Performance

The new Ranger Raptor is a 4×4 machine full-time all the time. Its 3.0L EcoBoost V6 gets you 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque with a towing capacity of 5,510 pounds (and a payload of 1,375). There’s no need to worry because you’ll have a 10-speed SelectShift automatic system to back you up no matter the job, and that’s not even the half of it. The Ranger Raptor also comes built with an electronically controlled on-demand two-speed transfer case along with both front and rear locking differentials to secure every drive with confidence. Ford even threw in 2.5-inch FOX live valve shocks to give you the motivation to keep up high speeds on rough terrain (while driving responsibly, of course). As you can see, much thought was put into the powertrain alone, and we still have a lot more to cover.

How can the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison top that? Well, it can’t. Its TurboMax engine is rather sad, only putting out 310 horsepower with 430 lb-ft of torque. The transmission isn’t even anything special, just your typical 8-speed without any special enhancements. One upside is that there are Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers exclusive to the Bison, although we would hardly say it’s worth it.

Safety & Features

You could say that Ford thought of everything when designing the Ranger Raptor, including ensuring your safety on the road. Yes, you get the basics like auto emergency braking and lane-keeping guidance, but what else? One of our favorites is the 360 camera which is always useful for checking your surroundings in high-traffic areas (like a job site, for instance). For something more specific to trailering, you’ll love the upgraded Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with both cross-traffic and trailer coverage to help you stay safe when you have something in tow. You can also take on any job with greater confidence knowing that AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control is primed and ready to help you out when you need it.

The Colorado ZR2 Bison offers a standard Chevy Safety Assist package with your essentials, but let’s move on to the extras. Much of the interesting features are paid add-ons with Rear Pedestrian Alert and Rear Park Assist being a couple of the most useful. You’ll also see some trailer-specific driver-assist features on the list, but nothing else that stands out as new or innovative.

Interior

A pickup should have an efficient and functional cabin, and that’s exactly what the Ranger Raptor does and more. The bucket seats keep you nice and secure in place, with 10-way power adjustments for the driver’s seat and 8-way power adjustments for the passenger. The driver’s chair has memory settings if you tend to share your ride, but both seats offer heating. The backseat arrangement is where things get a little more practical. The rear bench can fold flat and offers under-seat storage to keep a good handful of belongings.

Bottom Line

The difference in horsepower is already enough reason to get us to choose the Ranger Raptor over the Colorado ZR2 Bison, but we’ve found even more to love about Ford’s prized pickup that Chevy simply doesn’t offer.
